Christy Merrick is a Research Specialist II, in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Missouri - Columbia. She is working with Columbia, MO caregivers of cancer patients in hospice care by facilitating a secret Facebook support group. She is also working with a Warrensburg, MO hospice team to manage the technology that connects family caregivers with the hospice interdisciplinary team to discuss the ongoing care-planning for the hospice patient. Ms. Merrick also facilitates a Bereavement Group serving the family caregivers of the research project participants after the patient has died, for the four research sites. In addition, she engages participants through telephone surveys and interviews.

Ms. Merrick has a Master’s degree in Sociology, and a Graduate Certificate in Social Gerontology from the University of Central Missouri - Warrensburg. Her recent work experience includes health literacy programming for low-income families in a rural healthcare setting and competency development for at-risk youth in the juvenile justice system; she also has a special interest in the homeless. Ms. Merrick’s Hobbies include reading, bingo, and playing cards. She says “I love being a part of something that is researching possible tools for caregivers to better manage their pain and hardship - tools that I wish I had known about or had access to when I was a caregiver myself for my mother and grandmother”.
